In order to take the best care of your skin and keep it healthy , you need to know your skin type. Without that information, you can purchase all the best products on the market, and still see no results!
If you work with a qualified esthetician, you probably already know your skin type. And you don’t have to worry about it because you only buy products she/he recommends. But if you’re trying to care for your skin without an esthetician, this is what you need to know.
Skin is generally described as either dry, normal, oily or sensitive
Do I have dry skin?
- Pore size is small
- T-Zone (where pores are a little larger) in nose only.
- T-Zone may feel oily 10 to 12 hours after cleansing.
People with dry skin can’t leave the house without applying moisturizer. Their skin feels tight and uncomfortable after cleansing. Cold weather makes dry skin even dryer, resulting in dry patches and itchiness.
Do I have normal skin?
- Pore size is medium
- T-Zone extend to middle of cheeks
- May feel oily 7 to 9 hours after cleansing.
People with normal skin tend to “forget” about skin care routine because their skin does not “scream” for care. Of course, in reality, it needs as much care as the other skin types.
Nevertheless, normal skin will be the easier to take care of, unless it has other skin condition*
Do I have oily skin?
- Pore size is large
- T-Zone extends to the entire face
- May feel oily 1 to 3 hours after cleansing.
People with oily skin tend to skip the moisturizer part of their routine. But this is a mistake. When you think moisturizer, you often think oil: but a good moisturizer for oily skin will bring hydration to your skin (water) and not oil. By keeping your skin hydrating, your skin will actually start producing less oil.
Do I have combination skin?
Typically, this skin type is characterized by oily T-Zone and dry cheeks.
In the winter, the skin feels more on the drier side, and in the summer, more on the oilier side.
Do I have sensitive skin?
If your skin is red, often feels itchy or warm after using new products, you might have sensitive skin. If it just happens in certain situations, let’s say in the winter or in the summer, it could just be sensitized (by cold or heat). Sensitized skin is a temporary skin condition*, while sensitive skin is a skin type.
Determining your skin type is simple and necessary for an effective skin care routine.
We tend to chose our skincare products to fix our skin conditions without paying attention to our skin type. Products will only have the desired results if they are formulated for your skin type.
If you still have doubts on which type of skin you have, call an esthetician and ask if they provide a free consultation (most do).
